Meeting 380 - -"Wines from Spain"

Friday 16th January 2015     Neville Hall, Waltham St Lawrence

Speaker:  Floyd Mills

Moreno Wines was first established in 1968, when Juan and Salome Moreno started selling Spanish wines to the restaurant trade in west London, when Portobello was the heart of the Spanish community. The Company has now started to move into Italian Wines. Floyd joined the Moreno only a few years ago having previously concentrating on blending wines for the wine market. He provided us with an eclectic range wines from many Spanish wine areas.
The aperitif was an organic sparkler from Penedès. Very dry with a medium acidity. Pleasant easy drinking. The Laureatus that folowed had been left for some time on the lees to produce a creamy palate but clean acidic finish. The liqourice nose was quite distinctive. The most notable feature of the El Xit-Xarello was it's unusual labelling. The final white, Muriel Reserva had a relatively deep corn colour and a complex nose of molasses, lime and varnish.
The first red, barrel aged Godelia, had a nose of rich plum with some smokiness or tar. The deep maroon colour was complimented by good fruit, soft tannins and a fairly long finish. The Muriel Reserva, a blend of grapes from several Rioja vineyards had a herby, fennel, nose with a very full raspberry or plum palate. Well balanced with a long finish. The Viña Muriel Reserva proved to be the most popular wine of the evening: rich cherry fruit with good tannins and a long finish. The Muriel Reserva 2004 showed that it is not always obvious that extra aging is beneficial.
Altogether a very interesting range of different wines that got a high average score from the members.

Charlotte provided an a plate of nibbles to wake up the palate for the wines and then two Spanish dishes - pork cooked in milk followed by sour cherry tart, both Rick Stein recepies.
